Omega-3: which oil?
Sold as fish oil, algal oil and krill oil. Each is compared separately, on the combined EPA and DHA its own label states, never on total oil.
Of the 61 products across every type: 13 named at the exact package by a certifier, 9 certified batch by batch, 1 at another size only, 1 listed but not confirmed at its package, 37 in no database we searched.
A softgel's total oil is not its EPA and DHA, so a bottle price tells you little. Priced per 1,000 mg of EPA+DHA; panels that omit those get no price per dose.
Vegan omega-3 from algae, priced per 1,000 mg of combined EPA+DHA as the panel states it. Some carry DHA and no EPA, so the panel figures sit next to the price.
Krill oil is sold by milligrams of oil, which is not the same as EPA and DHA. Where a panel states no EPA or DHA amount, there is no price per dose.
Questions about omega-3
Cheapest means the cheapest we track, not the cheapest that exists. A price per 1,000 mg is a statement about price, not a suggestion of how much to take. How these numbers are made: How we compare.
What this rests on: prices we last recorded at the retailer named on each product page, which go stale, and each page says when it was checked; the products we track, not every product sold, and Amazon and Walmart are not among the stores; listings and labels read at the source, each linked from the page.
